It seems like the further you go back in time, the more garments people wore. Until they weren't wearing anything at all. Is there historical significance to the amount of clothes we wear?

From a global perspective tropical areas seemed to stay consistent with their clothing, but traditional clothing in places like the Americas (Indigenous), Asia, and Europe used to be very layered and took effort to put on. Does this have to do with industrialization and increased protection from the elements?
