Egyptology vs History Major

by Hairy-Source-2467

This may seem obvious but with my strong interest in Ancient Egypt, Egyptology seems the most likely pathway for my education.

Am I able to get a similar education with a History major? How would I go about specializing my education/degree? Or is it best to stick with Egyptology?

Any related major is fine – history, classics, anthropology, art history, etc. I think it's best to get a broad foundation in the humanities at the undergraduate level. My advice for getting into a PhD program in Egyptology:

  • Complete an independent research project or senior thesis. Your writing sample is pretty important for PhD programs, and it's important to show that you can do historical research.

  • Acquire a reading knowledge of French and/or German.

  • If possible, take at least one year of Middle Egyptian. Study abroad somewhere that offers it (e.g. the American University in Cairo) if it's not available at your college.

I wrote more about the academic training required for Egyptology in How difficult is it to become an Egyptologist, and does it require multiple degrees?

What country are you based in? The pathways to Egyptology vary quite a lot depending on where you are.
