What stage of development were the Mesoamerican civilizations in prior to colonization in relation to Europe?

I'm wondering if there is a comparison of where the Mesoamerican (Maya/Aztec) civilizations were if we compare them to European development? Maybe in different aspects? Were they 300 years behind in technology? 500? Thanks.

I would encourage breaking away from this notion that “Civilization A was X years behind Civilization B despite being contemporaries”, since development isn’t really a “linear tech tree”. As /u/[deleted] notes (link upcoming):

There's no force pushing technology to "advance" in linear progression: This is really hard for many modern Westerners to wrap their heads around. In our culture we tend to see technology as something that moves "forward" or "backward" from "primitive" to "advanced". In fact, this is a cultural value that we've placed on technology traceable back to the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, and not an intrinsic property of technology itself.

i recommend the whole FAQ section about Technology and Civilization in the Americas—and anyone has anything more to add, go for it!—but here are a few older answers you may find interesting (not all about Mesoamerica specificaly, though):
