the 1st Infantry Division had seen combat in North Africa and Sicily from November 1942 until May 1943 and June 1943 until August 1943, respectively. The 82nd Airborne fought on Sicily from June to August 1943, and on mainland Italy from September to November 1943. The 1st Infantry Division arrived in England in October 1943, and the 82nd Airborne in November.

The 4th and 29th Infantry Divisions and the 101st Airborne Divisions had not experienced combat previously.
