The 4th and 29th Infantry Divisions and the 101st Airborne Divisions had not experienced combat previously. The 29th Infantry Division arrived in England in October 1942, the 101st Airborne Division in September 1943, and the 4th Infantry Division in January 1944. The 4th Infantry Division holds the dubious distinction of suffering the most casualties of any U.S. division that fought in a single theater, with the 29th Infantry Division close behind.
