AH's curated booklist offers recommendations for titles that are useful, reliable and either balanced or at least offer thoughtful perspectives in various ways. You won't go far wrong by scanning it. Here's the section devoted to the United States.
In terms of a general intro to US history that's up-to-date, strives to redress some past wrongs in terms of the focus of its coverage, is written by an acclaimed historian, and is also highly readable, my own personal recommendation would be to start with Jill Lepore's recent These Truths (2019).
