What were the tactics? How much was artillery and musket vs hand to hand.
Just watching this scene from the Patriot where the British calmly walk into range and then start opening fire. No serious army would do this surely? They'd crouch, take cover, get prone and try utilise the range of their weapons first?
Every serious army, in fact, did this, precisely because a musket doesn't have much range and it's a royal pain to load a musket prone. More can always be said on the matter if anyone would like to expand further on the little quirks of Early Modern warfare; for the meantime, I commend to your attention the appropriate section of the FAQ, specifically the headers 'Why did European armies use Linear Tactics?' and 'Mechanics of Linear Tactics'.
