How do historians verify that a person existed and was not made up ?

If more than one document, written by different people in different places describes that person, with points that are comparable, one can reasonably assume that person existed. There are also a few other ways, when you are looking at ancient cultures that had a written language and were meticulous about keeping records. For example, the ancient Chinese were excellent record keepers, and a lot of historical figures are thought to have existed because they are mentioned in ancient Chinese documents.
