Great Grandfather's German Military Uniform WW2

by Nickb210

My great grandfather is from Mainz and fought in WW2 for Germany. Could anyone tell me more about his uniforms? Can you tell what he did based on the uniforms he is wearing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It seems that your great grandfather was either a Master Sargent or 1st Sergent in the Heer or Army. It's hard to know with the black and white photos as these two shoulder insignia are very similar the only difference is that one has green border while the other is a red border Secondly, your Great grandfather has also was awarded a marksmanship Lanyard that is his shoulders. On your Great Grandfather uniform, the second button indicated he won an iron cross second class. His ribbon pins have two awards one Iron Cross Second Class the other one is Wehrmacht Long Service Award and the single Nazi Eagle indicated four years of service. He also has two unidentifiable awards on his left breast pocket and his cuffs. It was hard to see the award from the photos. On his breast pocket, It could be an infantry assault Badge or a wounded badge it hard to tell. He also has a cuff title it shows what campaign he participate was in it hard to tell it could be anything from the Crete to Africa.

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
