this map shows themes across the empire in 1045, but I am interested in themes in 700s/800s.
this map shows themes in the time period, and it gives detail of different settlements, but doesnt include greece. Are there any sources for a map like this one, but which shows greece? only ones i can find are later.
Check out Warren Treadgold's A History of the Byzantine State and Society. He has several detailed maps of the Empire (besides his sweeping discussions of various aspects of life and society), including maps of the provinces, themes, etc. for the major eras, starting with Constantine's time and ending with the Palaiologoi.
Additionally, John Haldon has some good maps in his book Warfare, State, and Society in the Byzantine World (565-1204). His map selection covers the themes in AD 717, AD 920, and AD 1050, and the doukates (duchies) of the later Macedonian and Komnenian era.
