If you're coming at the Asian war without any prior knowledge, then I'd highly recommend Indy Neidell's World War 2 In Real Time series. It's especially good for getting the basic outline of events during the war. Each week covers the war as a whole, so you'll get European events along with Asian ones, but Neidell is very conscientious to give a full picture of the war in that week, instead of just focusing on the spotlight events.

In conjunction with that, I shall also refer you to the subreddit's booklist; that link will take you directly to the WWII section, and specifically the subsection on the Pacific War and the Second Sino-Japanese War. You can refer to the listed works for a deeper look into what Neidell touches on.

Alternatively, you can be a weirdo like me and go in sideways. My first serious history work was Parshall and Tully's Shattered Sword, which covers the Japanese side of the Battle of Midway, and my further study into the Pacific War has been all about aircraft carriers and related matters. This has its ups and downs (it helped that I was studying aircraft carriers instead of the war in general), but it worked well enough for me. Though in this case it'd help to have a specific interest identified, the better to focus on it.
