Short Answers to Simple Questions | March 10, 2021

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.
  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.
  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.
  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.
  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.
  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).
  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

i THINK this is short, anyways - how did the Romans express mathematical concepts like division, etc? what symbols did they use? in other words, what would a “roman math problem” look like? i can find info on how they’d SOLVE the problems, but not so much expressing them

As any child king ever had a tantrum that caused harm to his kingdom? Or any tantrum story is welcome!

Should I stop listening to Dan Carlin? I like the stories but the amount of rigorous critique I’ve read about him here make me feel bad about it.

What's the origin of the stereotypical "french maid"?

Was it actually common for the rich to hire attractive French women to clean their mansions?

The Byzantines retained much of the Hellenistic technology: for example, we know that a hydraulic pipe organ was donated by the Byzantine emperor to Pepin the Short, and then to Charlemagne. Liutprand of Cremona in his diplomatic mission described with wonder an automata-throne, probably water-powered as well. But did they lose other Roman technology, for example concrete? If so, why?

What was the reason for military dog tags to change their shape from a circle to a rectangle? Was it to be cheaper to produce or some other factor?

I'm wondering about military (and paramilitary) uniforms. When did they start being universally camouflage (rather than simple khaki or green etc), even people who work at desks, officers, everybody? And why?

If this falls short of the 20-year rule, please excuse me, but my memory suggests it was already true in Desert Storm.

When was the world map completed? At what point could one say with certainty that there were no longer any hidden islands lurking in some hitherto undiscovered corner of the oceans?

I'm trying to figure out concrete identifying features in this picture of my grandmother, most likely during WWII. Features such as the type of outfit she's wearing (bars on her hat?), the uniform of the man in the background (his pants resemble Soviet WWII pants), what kind of bike she has, etc. It would help me figure out the location and year it was taken, and thus help identify her occupation/happenings before leaving Poland. My reverse image search on the architecture/clothing/bike has failed. Could this picture be in eastern Poland/Słonim under Soviet rule (before June 26 1941, aged 16), or under the Third Reich (June 26–July 10 1944, aged 16–19), or be somewhere/somewhen else entirely?

A little context: Born 1925 in Wilno, eastern Poland (modern Lithuania). Left Słonim, eastern Poland (modern Belarus) around May 1944 (aged 19). Her life between 1939-1945 is a mystery to my family, and this picture might help clarify it.

[Military music question]

Does there exist a list of German military marches written after 1956 (the establishment of the Bundeswehr)?

I actually know some of these marches like Stratosphären-Marsch or Starfightermarsch but I would be happy to see the full list of the other marches written especially for Bundeswehr, Bundesluftwaffe and Bundermarine.

In Ptolemy’s world map, “taprabone” or the island of Sri Lanka is oversized. Is this due to the perception of a large kingdom or simply because of invalid information? Are there any documents on the relationship between ancient Sri Lanka and Greek states around that time?

Aside from Herodotus, have there been any adventurer-historians whose adventures have been integral to their work as historians?

One occasionally runs across "real life Indiana Jones" figures in the earlier days of paleontology (e.g., Roy Chapman Andrews) and archaeology (Belzoni), but historians who run around having adventures seem a rarer bunch.

Trying to find what the (original) endonym for the island of Madagascar.

When I google it people just quote the transliteration.

For example:

https://theculturetrip.com/africa/madagascar/articles/how-madagascar-got-its-beautiful-name/

Which shows that it's an exonym even if it has been embraced by the locals. So my question is what did it used to be called, if you went there in 1880s before the French arrived what did the local Malagasy people call it? What did they call their language?

I read that Malagasy is derived also from Madagascar.

So, I have been in a bit of a rabbit hole reading about how Canada, Australia and New Zealand slowly became more and more independent from the UK. My question is about the statute of Westminster. In section 4 it said that the UK parliament could still legislate on Canadian, Australian an New Zealand matters, but only if the country involved asked them to, if I understand it correctly (which I may not). Was this ever put into practice? I understand that the UK parliament also still legislated about constitutional matters in Canada, but other than that did any of those countries asked the UK parliament to be involved in local matters?

How should I plan for a history degree?

I really love studying and investigating the Bible, that time period, the cultures, and I'm so confused on a college path for that. I'd be starting fresh in college. Would it just be a Bachelor of Arts in History? Or some kind of Bachelors in Religion? I've called a few colleges and they haven't sounded very sure in their responses. I just want to be sure I start on the right path.

A hopefully quick question in the Art History category.

The internet famous illusion/art piece that was done by Sandro Del-Prete and titled Love Poem of the Dolphins in English, Liebesbotschaft der Delphine in German, link to the actual artists site (possibly NSFW depending on art things and mental purity).
Was it originally published in his 1981 book Illusorismen (Amazon Link) or not? Or when was it published/displayed?

I'm not entirely sure whether or not this is a 'recent' (20 years) question because there's only three books that I can find through internet sleuthing, and the next book of published artwork is from 2007.

I have a transcript of a WW2 Medical Field Service school broadcast from 1/15/1944 that my grandfather read on the air describing the allies invasion of Sicily. Is there some repository that I can send a copy of this too? Not sure if it’s historical value or if copies of these are held somewhere already

I have been told that there was an author during the WW2 time period that was investigated by the FBI for how realistic his fiction books were in regards to military operations and such. I was also told that he told the agents doing his investigation that he knew they were building something in New Mexico (the atomic bomb) because a large number of scientists had changed their addresses to the middle if the desert. Is this true, and if it is what is the authors name?
