To oversimplify the different viewpoints, one side calls him "Hitler's Pope", talks about his refusal to acknowledge the Holocaust, and says that he was pro-fascist because he wanted them to help stop the spread of communism; the other side argues that the Church was actively involved in rescuing Jewish citizens from Nazi-occupied territories and helped the allies with espionage missions, and that the Pope pretended to be Hitler's friend to keep the Nazis from coming after the Church. What's the historical consensus on the Pope and the Catholic Church during World War II?
