Hello I hope this kind of post is allowed first off. I was basically wondering how you knew history was the right major and how it’s come in handy since? I’m also thinking if I do I’d pair it with anthropology or possibly archeology and wondered what sort of job future I could look forward to that actually utilizes my degree especially if I decide to get my masters in it. Thank you for any help you can give!!
If you go through my post history, I’ve commented on similar threads a couple of times. Most recently 19 days ago, hopefully that makes it easier to find! I was going to copy and paste it but I’m on mobile and seemingly can’t copy the original text.
In short, I’m a librarian and use skills that I learned while obtaining my history degree every day.
What do you want to do eventually? What things are important to you in a job? That will definitely inform your choices.
I can’t really answer how I knew history was the right major. I just sort of always knew? I remember being fairly young, maybe 12, and knowing that when I went to college, it would be to study history. I’ve always loved history. No other major would have made sense for me.
With that said, as you’ll see in my prior posts, there are some caveats. A humanities degree will give you “soft skills” that are widely applicable in the job market. You’ll be a good writer, develop deeper critical thinking skills, and understand how to sort through information. However, you will not learn hard skills that directly funnel you into a particular job in the same way a mechanics engineering degree would, for example. Take any debt you may accrue into consider and have a plan or two or three for what happens after you graduate with a bachelor’s degree. “Finding a job” isn’t the answer. You’ll need an actual plan for what kind of job that’ll be so that you can land it. Or a plan for graduate or professional school (law, library, etc.). If you are really unsure about what job you’d like but know history is a good fit, I’d recommend majoring in history and getting a teaching endorsement or minoring in education, depending on how your school handles it. This way, you’ll have a career option to fall back on.
