World war 2 - Pacific Theatre

by Cymru2294

Hi Guys, just watched the pacific for the second time and got a few questions to ask:

What did the Japanese think of the marines and vice versa during the war?

Did each side actually see each other as sub-human?

What books/documentaries would you recommend? Sorry for all the questions just really interested in this subject.

Thanks

The classic book on this topic is War without Mercy: Race and Power in the Pacific War, by John Dower. He covers the racialized depictions of Americans in Japan, and of Japanese in America, in great detail. He then shows how racist imagery and beliefs on both sides affected the way the war was fought. If you're interested in this topic, this is definitely the book to start with.
