The Ancient Near East.

by Gilgamesh1732

Hello, kind historians of reddit!!

I have found myself recently immersed in the ancient near east history: the Sumerians, Akkadians, Hittites and Egypt to name a few. Since this is new to me, I find myself unable to find any first-hand accounts of any events especially in the middle to late bronze age periods. Also any source of high-quality maps of any kingdom, region...etc would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry if this sounds stupid or not thorough enough. I'm just a curious fella who wants to know what happened there. All of it xD

Start with the AskHistorians reading list, which has reading suggestions for most of the major ancient Near Eastern civilizations.

Ancient Near East: Historical Sources in Translation edited by Mark Chavalas is an excellent compilation of historical texts. I recommend reading it in conjunction with Cuneiform Texts and the Writing of History by Marc Van de Mieroop, which discusses how Assyriologists and ancient Near Eastern historians use cuneiform texts to study history.

For maps, see Atlas of the Ancient Near East by Trevor Bryce. Cultural Atlas of Mesopotamia and the Ancient Near East by Michael Roaf (free PDF) is badly dated but still very useful.
