I'm a British or French soldier in WWI. My army attachment just had a big push with no orders to fall back. I got scared halfway through no man's land and came back to my own trenches. What is likely to happen to me next?

While I know MOST would not have been executed by firing squad or something like that; I have always wondered how awkward that conversation would have been climbing back down those ladders.

Were they "written up" or reprimanded in any way? Did they get a pat on the back and a sort of "ah, well you tried" kind of thing??

Also, not saying I could do any better. I can't even imagine the terror thst must have caused.
