Why do you associate with this the "Old West"? The Wiki page had many media attributes, and the oldest ones it lists were not from the American West. One should not trust Wiki, of course, but it is useful for lists of sources, and my instinct was to respond that this has nothing really to do with the West, which Wiki confirms. Indeed, I suspect it is a creation of film, television, and now video games, but I'm not sure - and my instinct that this is not an aspect of the West. I have never heard of it there.
