What explains that Russia did not know about North America since you can see Alaska from the Eastern-most part of Russia?

The peoples living in the eastern regions of Russia did know. As for those from the European side of the Ural Mountains, it took them a while to get there. More can always be said if anyone would like to address the matter; for the meantime, u/Commustar and u/Kochevnik81 address a similar question to yours.
