What are some of your reading recommendations for the History of the Turkish Republic?

There are a lot of publicly available books about the fall of the Ottoman Empire and about Mustapha Kemal Ataturk, but virtually nothing until Erdogan's rise in the 21st Century. What are some of your reading recommendations that cover people such as Kenan Evren, Ismet Inonu, Tansu Ciller, or Turgut Ozal?

I think many general histories of Turkey contain chapters covering those people and times. One example is Erik Jan Zürcher's Turkey: A Modern History, which tells the story of Turkey from the late Ottoman period to, I think, 2002. Feroz Ahmad's The Making of Modern Turkey is excellent though only tells the story until the beginning of the 1990s. Ahmad's more recent Turkey: The Quest for Identity covers a much larger timeframe, starting with summarising the very beginning of the Ottoman Empire, but it then goes on until the rise to power of Erdogan's AKP, to 2003. If you want a more in-depth look at Turkish political parties before the AKP, you can also check Political Parties and Democracy in Turkey, ed. by Jacob Landau and Metin Heper.

I hope this helps and feel free to tell me if you have any further queries or want further recommendations!
