I'm working on a fictional story and one of places I'm planning on including is inspired by Ancient Rome. I think I got most of the central characters mapped out. (The leader of this place is inspired by Augustus and Trajan) but I'm drawing blanks on how the society function since I’ll like to make it as accurately as possible
How was the social order?
Normal life for both a "high" citizen and a "low" one?
Treatment of non Roman citizens? (What I mean by this is that I’m assuming that at it’s height the empire had conquered many lands but those lands had natives that were not Roman. How were these people treated?
How was life for a boy and girl respectively? Were there expected roles they needed to “grow” into?
From movies and what I read bout Nero(wether it’s true or not) I can guess that Christians had it rough. How rough? Were there any other groups that had it as bad or worse?
That's just some of the few questions I got but in all honesty I would like to know everything related with the society during that period. I don't mind reading more on my own as long as its free so if there are links you'll like to include, please do so.
Also asked in r/history since I’m not that sure which sub best fits my inquiries.
Thanks in advance.
