This is my first time on the sub so I’m sorry if this isn’t the proper place to ask this kind of question. But today I learned a little bit about Mayan hieroglyphs being cracked in the 70’s. I have to know if there is a book with pictures of them and their translations together. I’ve looked around a bit but haven’t found anything that seems like what I’m looking for. If anyone could point me in the right direction I’d appreciate it!
This is a late response, but there are a couple books you could use to learn more.
The first is “Breaking the Maya Code,” by Michael D. Coe. The second is “Understanding Maya Inscriptions,” by John F. Harris. The second is one that I’ve personally read all of and it goes very in-depth into known transcriptions and reading of Mayan hieroglyphs. Coe’s is on my shelf but I haven’t read much of it, so I can’t vouch for it as well.
It’s important to remember that our understanding of the depth of the written Mayan language is fairly limited because so much of their writing was destroyed, leaving only stone monument inscriptions and a couple of codices. Both books I referenced will go into detail about the Mayan language and grammatical syntax, variations of the hieroglyphs, and understanding how the logographs were constructed, focusing more on the intricacies of the language rather than simply translating writings.
The Mayan language is fascinating since they developed their writing system independently from the old world (Chinese hanzi and Sumerian cuneiform), so their approach to written language is entirely unique. It looks somewhat like Egyptian hieroglyphs, with the artistic symbols instead of letters, but the actual syntax is more like Korean hangul— syllabic features like faces, feathers, rings, globes, etc are built into intricate “word blocks”.
There are also plenty of papers you can find online if you look for research articles on Mayan writing, rather than just books.
