When I look at maps of Napoleon’s conquests, it seems he mostly set up a system of puppet states to run Europe for him..... except for modern day Croatia, which he ran directly. Why?

Follow up: what is a good book to start investigating the rise and fall of Napoleon? I feel my education lacks in that regard and I'd like a gentle introduction to that rich historical seam.

edit: Summary of books suggested below in no particular order with generic Amazon links

  1. Jakob Walter: "Diary of a Napoleonic Soldier"
  2. Andrew Roberts: Napoleon, A Life
  3. Adam Zamoyski': Napoleon, A Life
  4. David G. Chandler: The Campaigns of Napoleon
  5. Anonymous: Journal of a Soldier of the Seventy First or Glasgow Regiment From 1806 to 1815 I say "Anonymous" because the author, in the first sentence, explains that they choose not to reveal their name. It was printed by Balfour and Clarke of Edinburgh in 1819.
