Looking for information in detail about important places in Prague in the middle ages 1000-1500

by itaicool

Hi I hope this is the right place to ask and I'm not breaking any rules, I have a school assignment where I need to make a travel guide about prague in the middle ages, I need to list important places in the era and explain about their purpose.

Searching the web I struggled to find much information about those and even wikipedia was bland in detail, I'm looking for help to find where I can get this information or hear about them from you.

Thank you.

Hi - we as mods have approved this thread, because while this is a homework question, it is asking for clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself, which is fine according to our rules. This policy is further explained in this Rules Roundtable thread and this META Thread.

As a result, we'd also like to remind potential answerers to follow our rules on homework - please make sure that your answers focus appropriately on clarifications and detailing the resources that OP could be using.

Additionally, while users may be able to help you out with specifics relating to your question, we also have plenty of information on /r/AskHistorians on how to find and understand good sources in general. For instance, please check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which has a wealth of information that may be useful for finding and understanding information for your essay.

Hello,

At least Wikipedia Entry of the History of Prague in its medieval and Renaissance (that began with the 14th century) sections in English seems to have generally did a decent job, though without any notes to the actual reference.

Thus, the lack of the reference is bad, since many teachers instruct students to use wikipedia entry only as an entry point to the further research, not as a final destination of the internet search on the topic they assign. Neither looks the further reading section in the end of the entry promising, since many books listed there seem to focus on the 19th and 20th centuries, judged by their titles (I wonder where the rather detailed text of pre-modern Prague has come from, if only based on these listed books alone).

You can at least find, however, names of some historical figures, famous historical events, and city districts as well (even some of them have links to their individual entries) in these two, medieval and Renaissance sections in Wikipedia. The picture of several historical buildings in City Prague, with the link to their respective entry, are also found in the right column of the wikipedia entry. They might also be relevant to the medieval and Renaissance parts of the history of Prague. You can check, or google these proper names to find more reliable resources on the internet than wikipedia. Alternatively, some of the linked entries like Hradčany has links to the official site, though some of such English official sites are now dead and only remain in the internet links.

I hope you can find at least the official tourist site of the city of Prague, with some multilingual texts on the history of some individual buildings and districts by these steps (I suppose you are not expected to find and to borrow the decent academic literature on the medieval history of Prague, like [Royt 2016] (see below)).

This is the way the wikipedia should at least serve as a entrance door to your research.....well, .at least in my understanding (as I teach some first year students in my country)......
