Is the choice of the word "Famous" intentional? I ask because it's a fitting descriptor and the basis for a good question, which I’ve had lined up to answer for awhile. Beyond the fact that Venice was able to project power onto a much larger slice of the Italian mainland and was a more active political player for a longer time, was there any specific or even intentional reason why the popular conscious leaves more space to the Republic of Venice as opposed to Genoa?
I'm not quite sure how I managed to surpass the word count cap, but as I didn't plan to cut up my answer into easily dividable sections I'm going to try to post the full body of my answer below this introduction in order to keep the answer as intact as possible.
