Free-standing cast iron gas radiators in the 30's and 40's?

by MoonMist4747

This is such an obscure question. I've tried googling but haven't found much. I'm asking for a short story I'm writing. If it helps, I'm talking about these old gas radiators. https://www.thisoldhouse.com/heating-cooling/21015031/take-a-good-look-at-vintage-radiators

Here are my questions:

  1. Were these common in apartments in the 30's and 40's? I'm thinking of old tenement buildings in large cities like New York.
  2. Am I correct in assuming that the gas was turned on and then lit with a match?
  3. Would it pose a problem if one were to forget to light the radiator after turning the gas on? For instance, if someone turned on the gas and then forgot to light it before bed, could they possibly die of carbon monoxide poisoning?
  4. Finally, how often were carbon monoxide poisonings caused by gas radiators?

Those radiators were heated by hot water or steam generated by a central furnace using coal, oil or gas. Each room did not have a separate gas-burning mechanism, which would, indeed, have been dangerous! It is important to know, however, that those radiators could be damn hot and it was easy to burn oneself on them!

edit: This image shows how the system would work.
