An awesome collection you should check is the General History of Africa from UNESCO and you can download it in their website. This massive work, divide in VIII volume and there is more to come, gives a very good introduction from the Ancient History of the continent to the aftermath of the liberation wars and independencies. So you can find very good texts about pre-colonial Africa on the volumes I to VI, if remember well :)
