Hi, I'm searching for any book that covers the whole of Vietnam War from the government perspective. I don't wanna read about soldiers and civilians, I want to see characters like Ho Chi Minh and Vo Nguyen Giap in action, vietnamese politics and war strategies. Something akin to "The Campaigns of Napoleon" or "Hirohito and The Making of Modern Japan"
Could someone enlighten me?
It seems to me as if you are looking for books out of the perspective of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) as opposed to the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). It's important to remember that there were two very different perspectives (and governments) involved in the Vietnam War.
In that case, I am glad to recommend to you Pierre Asselin's Vietnam's American War: A History. Drawing heavily on archival material in Vietnamese, Asselin's book focuses on the Vietnam War out of the perspective of the North Vietnamese government and the men who planned and executed it. It draws heavily on Vietnamese-language source materials in accordance to newer streams of scholarship that asks Vietnam-centric questions. It's an amazing piece of scholarship that will definitely give you a lot of answers you were looking for (and that you weren't looking for!).
