Books, videos, people to talk to. I'm reading Ian Kershaw's biography on Hitler, and the politics of the time are confusing to me. I know they are very important for molding Hitler into the man we all know him as, but I would like to understand in much more depth why this was so.
More can always be recommended, but our booklist has a few options.
A few more recent books:
Hitler - Ascent 1889-1939 by Volker Ullrich: this covers a rather long period and obviously focuses on Hitler. However it deals extensively on his interactions and the reactions of the political actors at that time.
NOVEMBER 1918 THE GERMAN REVOLUTION ROBERT GERWARTH: in contrast this looks at a very short period, but gives a strong insight o. The political landscape in Germany and how it shifted in this rather short period, preparing the ground for Hitler’s rise.
ALL AGAINST ALL The Long Winter of 1933 and the Origins of the Second World War PAUL JANKOWSKI: this again discusses only a short period but takes an international perspective on how political actors in Europe positioned themselves. (It’s almost the counter part to ‘The Sleepwalkers’ by Christopher Clark who described the setup for WW I)
