Was the death rate in Boer War concentration camps really no higher than in contemporary Glasgow?

by MonoGatuno

A video has been going around on Twitter today of British politician Jacob Rees-Mogg making some (seemingly to me) shocking claims about Boer War concentration camps.

His claims seem to be:

  1. The South African concentration camps had exactly the same mortality rate as existed in Glasgow at the time
  2. The people were put into camps for their own protection
  3. It was not systematic murder
  4. People were taken to the camps so that they could be fed.

Is there any truth to these claims?

We got a question about that when he said it, the thread for which can be found here.
