Hi all I’m looking for some reading on the fall of the Qing Dynasty and Chinese republic and rise of the CCP (so basically 20th century China) and also on the changing nature of warfare (from the French Revolution until WW2 but it doesn’t have to be that specific I can always read one that starts earlier and skip a bit)
Thanks I’m doing my A level exams next year and would love to get some reading done over the summer to get ahead
Someone with familiarity with the post-Qing period would be able to step in and fill that gap, but I wrote up a basic list of recommendations for the fall of the Qing here. For a quick and dirty guide for A-Level purposes, Rhoads' 2000 volume is probably the most accessible (and is open-access via JSTOR) but also the least broad-ranging; Esherick and Wei's edited volume will be a little less accessible but the most likely to give you a broad range of info.
As for changing nature of warfare (hey! that was one of my A-Level topics) I don't believe I know of a good general overview, but for the mid-19th century conflicts in particular you may find Geoffrey Wawro's books on the Austro- and Franco-Prussian Wars a real treasure trove of information about many aspects of military activity.
Hi there anyone interested in recommending things to OP! While you might have a title to share, this is still a thread on /r/AskHistorians, and we still want the replies here to be to an /r/AskHistorians standard - presumably OP would have asked at /r/history or /r/askreddit if they wanted non-specialist opinion. So give us some indication why the thing you're recommending is valuable, trustworthy, or applicable! Posts that provide no context for why you're recommending a particular podcast/book/novel/documentary/etc, and which aren't backed up by a historian-level knowledge on the accuracy and stance of the piece, will be removed.
