When and why did the naming conventions for the World Wars come about?

by IndiscriminateWaster

Were the terms “World War 1” and “World War 2” applied by later generations? Would veterans of either/both conflicts eventually refer to them as such? Instead of “The Great War” for example?

Follow-ups if the answers are out there:

Would those who experienced “The Great War” have referred to World War 2 as a sequel in the way that the naming currently implies?

Is naming of these conflicts based more-so on nationality instead, as in the Soviets’ “Great Patriotic War”?
