Hey there,
I'm off for a viking themed LARP and I would like to add some authenticity to my gear, my question would be if the crow feather was something that the warriors used to wear or was it reserved to more spiritual role ? Thanks a lot !
As for ravens, I wrote a relevant post for a while before in this subreddit: We know that ravens have a significant role in Norse Mythology, with Odins two ravens, but what were the real life vikings relationship with these birds like?
AFAIK it is very rare (1 of 34) that any remain of crows, not ravens, is found in the Viking Age 'falconry' grave (Jennbert 2011: 88), and bird motifs in Iron Age Scandinavia tend to be interpreted as other birds or prey and ravens rather than crows.
was it reserved to more spiritual role
On the other hand, it is in fact rather difficult to define the more strictly 'spiritual' social class in Viking Scandinavia, so at least I can say the use of crow feathers in the ornament was not certainly reserved to any special social group......,though I'm rather afraid that the crow (especially actual crow and its remain) itself didn't have any cultural significance in Viking Age Scandinavia.
As for more detail as well as relevant references, please also refer to the previous post I linked above.
