Ancient-Origins - how reliable is it?

by Dragotc

Hi guys! As all of you, I'm very interested in history. I've read lots of things on lots of different sources. One page that I've found to be interesting is Ancient Origins. It seems like a pretty well researched site with a somehow different perspective. I've read about many things that I'd never heard of before.

And that makes me wonder: How reliable is this source? Is it just another perspective, but is also factually correct? Or is it the history equivalent of essential oils as cure for cancer?

So, what do you experts think? Should I keep reading ancient origins or should I avoid it?

I can answer this because I have the unusual distinction of having one of my publications cited there...

It's basically a blog that emphasizes the mysterious. The writers are freelancers, not premodern history specialists. So it's less reliable than, say, Archaeology magazine. It's possible that you will see misinterpretations on there. But in a vague sense, it's more reliable than Ancient Aliens on the History channel which basically emphasizes misinterpretations.

For instance, here's a random article from their front page about the Vatican Secret Archives. The title is a bit clickbait-y but the content is informative and answers questions about the Secret Archives in a more interesting and inviting way than the Wikipedia article.

Definitely don't use them as a citation, but if you are intrigued by something on there, it may be worth linking to their article as a jumping-off point for discussion, or trying to dig up their citations to see if their argument is legitimate.
