What were the biggest driving factors behind the bronze-age collapse?

Did people realize they were part of a civilizational collapse during the bronze age collapse?
Do we know how the general population of the Eastern Mediterranean was affected by the Bronze Age Collapse? Did the population of the region go down? Were they more or less urbanized as a result?
