Good movies covering historical events

by SourShortCake

Hi, I know this is probably not what the sub is for but I am taking a history class in University for the first time lol even though I am a creative writing student. I have an assignment where I have to watch and write about a movie or TV series which covers some kind of real event. I was going to just do Good Fellas because technically its based on a true story, but I thought I’d ask here to see if you guys have any better suggestions :)

There is a lot of bad history in movies. Some have nonetheless been great fun, gotten great reviews, even Oscars ( like Peter Shaeffer's Amadeus and recently The Favorite) . One that tried pretty hard to do justice to period language, period setting, and the historical record was Spielberg's Lincoln, where even the actors playing Seward and Staunton actually looked like Seward and Staunton. It also tried to portray something not usually given much attention: when the North refused to compromise with the South, which had offered to stop the war and re-join the Union if it was allowed to continue slavery. It was a political victory, but much more important than most of the actual battles because there was strong popular support in the North for such a compromise. If the compromise had been accepted, slavery would have continued.
