Medieval Cuisine

What was the cuisine like in Medieval Europe? Specifically, places like Italy who's modern cuisine relies heavily on things from the Americas such as tomatoes.

More answers remain to be written. There are other threads about Italian food before 1492 in the subreddit FAQ, but many European countries benefited from the introduction of New World foods.

It gets pretty crazy at times, especially for those people with money to burn. (Showing us that nothing has changed among humans...) This being a Medieval question, we of course turn to u/sunagainstgold:

u/BRIStoneman also has an answer on Medieval English peasant food in general, which also links back to one of their answers on the availability of meat.

For pre-tomato Italian food, this previous thread encompasses a post roundup on the matter and an overview by u/Grombrindal18.
