An Emperor or King's image on currency throughout history was used as a source of propaganda. Today we still have coins from many different rulers from different time periods. Was there ever confusion due to lack of communication at the far reaches of a domain that a former ruler was still in power?

For instance... If a Roman in 200 CE finds a coin with Trajan on it but Septimus Severus is the emperor, did the common folk understand who this was or would they be confused about who was the sitting leader?

Or if someone found a coin in Paris in 1000 CE with a Roman Emperor on it and not Robert II, what would they think?
