Title Says It
The saddest example i can give from the history of my country 'Battle of Sarıkamış'
The saddest part of this war is that it was a recklessly planned operation. Enver Pasha, the proxy supreme commander, had aimed to hit the Russians with great force from an unexpected place, by crossing the Allahuekber Mountains, and to reincorporate Kars into their homeland. In some parts of the Allahuekber mountains, the temperature dropped to 30 degrees below zero (altitude ranged from 2500-3000 meters). Most of the Turkish soldiers had come from the desert and were wearing summer uniforms. To put soldiers on this road without equipment meant deliberately dragging them to their deaths. When they crossed the Allahuekber mountains, 37,000 soldiers froze to death (the war had not yet begun).
Deputy Chief of Staff of the Russian Caucasian Army, Duke Alexandrovich Pietrovic said 'I could not take the last Turkish unit in the Allahuekber mountains. They had surrendered to God long before us.'
As a result Sarıkamış was besieged and the siege operation ended on 5 January 1915 due to extreme cold and hunger. The Ottoman Army lost 78 thousand martyrs in these mountains, of which 60 thousand were frozen. Russian troops also lost 32 thousand soldiers in these wars and the Russians won.
