How can I get access to historical sources for me to read?

by Kenny_K-Man

I’m studying the reconquista in the 11th century to help understand it better and make it somewhat historical for my historical fiction work. I know there are chronicles such as the Historia Silense and Historia Roderici, but I am unable to get access to them. I also want to get access to letters and charters during those time to learn the character of the characters I’m supposed to write. How can I do this? Can it be done for free?

I can recommend the vatican archives since youre dealing with the Reconquista. digitization is always ongoing so some things might be there some might not. Also the Library of Congress is always a must since your tax dollars help fund it (if you're american). It's the same deal as the V.A; if it's digitized you're good.

I might add, if you're getting inspiration from that time period you must not forget El Cid. While he did unspeakable things to the Moors and the Jews, alot of work has been done on him. you can probably take a biography of his and mine it for primary sources.
Quest for El Cid by Richard Fletcher looks to be an adequate introductory analysis to the legend.
