Is there a site to access newspapers from the South (USA) from the early 1800's?
I'm curious how slavery was talked about in local media at the time.
The best place to start without paying for subscriptions is with the Library of Congress. You can limit your search results to a specific state, but not to the South per se.

Some US states also have their own state-provided archives of their own newspapers, usually designating and funding a state university to manage and freely publish the results. Others are cooperating with LOC and adding their archives there. Look into that in the South on a state-by-state basis.
