Is historical pornography considered a reliably primary source for what people found attractive at different times?

For example, porn from the 70s and 80s often features actors with large amounts of body hair compared to today. Does this mean consumers back then preferred a furrier look, or is it just a reflection on something about the porn industry?

This old thread from myself and /u/kieslowskifan might be of interest given your core sub-question and body hair. They discuss the presence of pubic hair in pornography and shifting frequency of amount of it over time, or the lack thereof, rather. I'd particularly point to Kies' follow-up which goes into detail on the "Great Pubic Hair Showdown" and how it came to be that "pubic hair was an important threshold to mark explicit content in media." For very obvious reasons, keep in mind the linked content is quite NSFW.
