Why did Osama Bin Landen saw the First Gulf War as an attack on Islam, as opposed to the US helping protect the KSA, and other muslims?

by IronSabre

I've always been perplexed as to how Osama Bin Laden, Al-qaeda, and the extremist "community" in general, could have demonized the US, even after almost always being on the side of muslims? In Afghanistan, it armed the mujahideen, in the first gulf war, it liberated Kuwait, and many muslim nations were even part of the coalition.

So why? And what was Osama Bin Landen's view on Saddam Hussein? Considering that he had attacked muslim nations like Iran, Kuwait, and KSA?

I'm assuming that Osama didn't like the Iranians, as they were shia, but the Kuwaitis and the Saudis are sunnis, so?

Hopefully, someone here can help me clear this up.

Much of the answer to your question will be found (I hope!) on this question which I answered previously:

Saddam and Osama had similar enemies, but they were by no means friends. To Osama, Saddam was an atheist attacking Muslims abroad and suppressing them at home, so he had to be opposed. Even though the US government fought against him, they were Christians, allied with the Jewish Israeli government, and themselves had a long history of imperialism and violence against Muslims; even though the governments of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia etc. fought in the Coalition, they were seen as illegitimate and not truly Islamic regimes because of their decadence and things like that.

During the Gulf War in particular, US troops arrived on Saudi soil near the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina in order to wage war against a majority Muslim military and the majority Muslim Iraqi population massively suffered as a result of the conflict.

Osama didn't and couldn't see this as being on the side of Muslims. And in a way he was right not to - the US government was looking to ensure a regional balance of power didn't fall out of their favour and begin interfering with the oil supplies of the region, so it was just more imperialism as far as Osama bin Laden was concerned.

I hope this helps but I'm in a bit of a rush so if it's not very clear let me know and I'll get more in-depth on follow-up questions later if you have any!
