Alexander the great settled Greek and Macedonian soldiers in new cities throughout remote parts of Asia. Would this have been seen as a great deal for the soldiers? Or was Alexander dumping his veterans in poor, hostile areas in an attempt to install a loyal population base?

More can of course be said, but /u/toldinstone and I discussed aspects of Alexander's city foundations in this thread. In particular, we ought not to presume that Macedonians, and especially not Greeks, were inherently loyal to Alexander – cynically, a lot of these settlements can be regarded as attempts to put disloyal troops in places where they could do the least harm.
