Casualties of the 263 Rifle Division of the Red Army 1943/1944?

by hyperfish3d

Hello,

I am looking for information about the losses of the 263 Rifle Division of the Red Army. I found in a forum the following information without sources reference:

"There are almost exactly the numbers from the Karelian Front's losses tables. Namely: [...] 263 Rifle Division - 1084 killed, 6 missing".

Can anyone confirm this information or give a source? Also, it is unclear what period it is - does anyone know where I can find information on losses from late 1943 / early 1944?

Thanks

Hi there! You can find nearly all of the documents for 263rd Rifle Division at Pamyat' Naroda, Фонд 1552. ЦАМО РФ (Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense) uploads many of its materials there. You can also search by the unit name or document's author.

Daily loss reports are under the 263rd Rifle Division's combat reports, sometimes covering longer periods. For example, Ф. 1552, О. 0000001, Д.0166, Л. 6 has the losses from 10/28-10/31 as 182 killed and 500 wounded. You should take these and the other loss reports (1-day, 10-day, etc) listed by the Corps and Armies above it as floors, not ceilings. In the heat of battle you're not going to get a full accounting of casualties for a while after the fighting ends.

Are you sure the period you're looking for is the correct one? 263rd Rifle Division was transferred from the Karelian Front in 1942 and from December 1943 - May 1944 was part of the 4th Ukrainian Front's 51st Army. If you want to link the forum you referenced I can see what they're talking about and dig around in more detail.
