Quick sailing question

by Susic123

I am wondering, what kind of way did old sailing vessels use to apply jibs? I am right now talking about sloops with more than one jib. And the time period I am looking for is the 1700s.

To clarify, did ships use roller furling or did they just hank on the jibsails?

The roller furling jib wasn't found on ships until the very late 1800s and wasn't patented until the early 1900s. By the mid-1900s many yachts carried them, but they weren't particularly common on working or fishing vessels. In the 1700s any foresails would have a standard rig of a halyard to haul the sail up, sheets on either side for tacking, and they would have been furled by hand. You can look at virtually any tall ship operating these days to see that traditional foresail rig for reference. Although it's from the mid-1800s, Captain George Biddlecombe's "The Art of Rigging" is also a great reference on traditional sailing rigs that are similar to 1700s ships.
