I want to learn more about the Anabaptist movement's origins. I am not religious, but I grew up in a high anabaptist population region and am curious.
I have read a bit about Zwingli, Hubmaier, Mann, etc. I want to learn about the broader social context, as I know there were uprisings, wars, etc.
Any books or historians you suggest?
Or, anyone care to do a breakdown of anything you know of this era of Swiss history?
Cheers
Your best resource here is the official Historical Encyclopedia of Switzerland (Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz), which, alas, is only available in three of the four official Swiss languages online, but not in English. The articles in it are written exclusively by professional Swiss historians (citation worthy) and cover pretty much every important subject in Swiss history (and yes, there is plenty on the reformation). The best approach here if you have neither command of German or French or Italian is to do a search on the site using names, and have the resulting page(s) translated in Google Translate. Hope that helps.
