[META] Why is 20 years generally agreed upon as "history"?

by lightning_knight

I really only noticed it with 9/11 but more than this sub treat 20 years as history. How did everyone agree that 20 years is when news turns into history?

Hey there!

The 20 year rule is specific to our sub, rather than being some universal rule in the academic community. We've chosen it because it's a nice round number that also allows some distance between past events so that information can be properly read and digested and some distance between personal recollection and the analysis of events can be had.

For more information on what informed out decision, you can read our recent Rules Roundtable on the 20 year rule.
