Airplane! Were US airports in the 70's / 80's actually destinations for missionaries?

In the comedy movie Airplane! a running joke is that the characters are constantly accosted by aggressive missionaries and spiritual thinker groups while trying to walk through the airport. How accurate is this? Did many missionaries used to work airports in earlier decades? An audience in the theater would have needed to identify with this "common problem" right?

Wasn't alive during that time but I've heard my dad uncles and grandparents joke about the hare krishnas all decked out in their robes. Never saw them in real life until my ship pulled in to Hong Kong and they were waiting outside that Bulldog's pub place the liberty boats dropped us off at. Tried selling me a Buddha baseball card for 5 bucks and followed me and my buddies for like a block. He wouldn't leave us alone until we started cursing him out.
