Thursday Reading & Recommendations | October 21, 2021

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

DickieTurpin

What's the best book, as devoid of modern political biases and ideologies as possible, that details any differences between tribes of the geographical British Isles and those in Europe during the bronze and iron ages, and perhaps a little later.

I would love some book and/or article recommendations into the post-Neo-Assyrian period in Syria, especially the southern regions down to the Hauran. Most books cover the 9th-7th century BCE, and then material starts to pick up again around the Hellenistic period leaving the Neo-Babylonian and Persian periods a bit of a void in my reading. If material in English is not available I can also read French and German.

I've gotten really interested in World War 2, especially having to do with supply lines. I was wondering if there were any good podcasts/YouTube channels that deal with the subject.

Audio is just the best format for how I injest dense material, but if you guys have good recommendations for non-audio sources I'll take those too

I’m very interested in how modern people interact with history. What are some good books that cover this topic? I’m especially interested in Britain, but I’d also love more general discussions.
