Hi, I'd like to know the proportion of immigrants living in a smallish town in New York using the 1910 and 1920 Census records. I use the modern Census tables a lot to look at immigrant populations and other facts, but I can't seem to find anything like that for past censuses. Is there anything like that or would I have to count it out myself?
The census reports will give some of that in analytical fashion, but it only offered the summaries for larger cities and for counties. Since you're looking at a smallish town, it is likely not given specific treatment in the census reports. The manuscript census - which is available for both 1910 and 1920 - will provide the raw data, but you'll need to conduct a hand count unless someone has already digitized or otherwise counted that information for your town. Check with your local historical society. I also recommend that you ask the reference desk at the state library (or county library) - one or both of those entities should be able to tell you about the degree of analytics available for your "smallish town."
